The world's newest Anglo-Saxon longhall
A thousand years ago, this would have been a common sight. The meadhall, seat of the local ealdorman as he governs his corner of England with his thegns. Here he organises the defence of his land against interlopers and Danish marauders; here he celebrates holy days with huge banquets, and here he dispenses justice in the name of the King.
Wychurst is an attempt to recapture the grandure of the seat of local power in early medieval England. It is an experimental archaeology project. It is a place for television and films to capture the feel of England's forgotten history. It is the play-pen for the reenactment society, Regia Anglorum, who have built it and maintained it for a quarter of a century.
